Prince tribute for dance studios

Purple-RainIt is with great sadness to learn that the amazing musician and talented artist, Prince, has passed away. For many of us, his music is an integral part of the soundtrack of our lives.

It has been my honor to edit and remix some of his amazing music for dance studios and dance teachers. If you are interested in using a Prince song for a dance routine, here is an edited version of one of his songs that has amazing funk, yet is not very well known. It’s popular with the kids these days to say “Werk it!” but more than 30 years ago, Prince was already singing “Let’s Work!”. Enjoy this edit!

Here is Let’s Go Crazy from the movie Purple Rain. This version has all objectionable lyrics omitted, has been remastered, and edited specifically to be optimized for a jazz or tap dance routine:

And for dance studios interested in a mix that pays homage to “The Purple One”, we are pleased to present this 3 minute mix that includes five of Prince’s more popular hits:

This 4:55 production mix starts with Let’s Go Crazy, and includes Let’s Work:

This 4:45 production mix is similar but starts with Purple Rain:

The impact of music in dance

Over on the DanceMom.com discussion forum, it was brought up that some dancers really don’t care about the music that is used for a routine. Some people just want to dance, no matter what the music is.

While that is certainly a true statement, I also want to point out that in most instances of dance performance, music is of great importance. No matter whether it’s a cinematic work, broadway show, or dance competition, as much care should be taken with the choice of music as with the selection of costume, hairstyle, makeup, and props, especially in regards to the emotional impact the music can provide.

I’ve had the great pleasure of doing some music editing for title winning dancer Brianna Roland. Last year, I fixed the music she had self-edited, for the piece she had choreographed for Prince’s When Doves Cry. She won several dance competition titles with this outstanding routine:

For comparison sake, I edited k.d.lang’s Constant Craving, which uses the same 129 bpm tempo, to the same length of choreography, and swapped the audio for the original Prince song. Here is the same dance, but with Constant Craving as music:

In both versions, Miss Brianna’s dancing is superb (and of course is identical in both). Because the tempo of both songs is the same, many of Miss Brianna’s movements in the Constant Craving version are in sync with the music. Both songs are emotionally powerful. Watch both of these versions and let me know what you think of the difference between the two.

Headliner Regional High Score, Teen Division

Congratulations to Brianna Roland for winning Headliner’s Springfield Regional competition, Teen Division!

This routine features Prince’s When Doves Cry, which had a couple of audio glitches until I fixed it for her a few weeks ago.

Headliners has uploaded this routine to YouTube for your viewing pleasure:

If you have less-than-perfect music that needs fixing before Nationals, let me know!

Bringing home the Platinum

Squirrel Trench Audio is proud to have played a small role in helping a senior dancer bring home a Platinum and first overall performance at the Onstage New York regional competition in Springfield, Massachusetts last weekend. The number, When Doves Cry, is an original jazz choreography and performance by Brianna Roland. She did her own music editing of the Prince song as well. The dance is truly spectacular. Prior to this weekend, the music had a small hiccup at the ending. I fixed the hiccup, making the ending as flawless as the dance. Brianna was ecstatic to finally have perfect music to go with her beautiful performance. And the results couldn’t have been better: A Platinum award and first place overall. Congrats to Miss Senior Titlist, Brianna Roland!

If you also have a hiccup, glitch, scar, or other awkwardness in your music, it’s not too late to get it fixed in time for Nationals.

And now, Brianna’s routine has been uploaded by Headliners!
